The poster puts Johannes Brahms at the center of a concert series, promoting the Federal Symphony Orchestra's performances of his works under the New York City Federal Music Project. The Music Project was part of the Works Progress Administration, created in 1935 to employ out-of-work musicians and bring orchestral concerts to audiences who rarely heard them. Its posters were silkscreened by the WPA's Federal Art Project, a method chosen because it was inexpensive and allowed quick runs of bold color. A date stamped on the back, February 9, 1938, suggests when the poster was ready for distribution.
