This 1936 silkscreen poster announces free band concerts in the Bronx, a borough where the Federal Music Project brought live performances to neighborhood audiences. The Federal Music Project, one of the arts units of the Works Progress Administration, put unemployed musicians back to work during the Depression and staged concerts in parks, schools and other public spaces. Its posters were produced by the WPA's silkscreen workshops, which turned out bold, flat-color designs for cultural events across the country. The poster's wording, "free band concerts," points to the program's central goal of making music accessible to working-class New Yorkers at no cost.
