Two short comic operas share the bill in this color silkscreen: Pergolesi's "La serva padrona," an intermezzo first staged in Naples in 1733 about a clever servant who maneuvers her employer into marriage, and "The Romance of Robot," which is less documented, so the poster is the best record of the pairing. The Federal Music Project of the Works Progress Administration presented the program in New York City, part of the New Deal effort to keep musicians working and bring small-scale opera to wider audiences. The poster was made by the Federal Art Project's silkscreen unit, which produced many inexpensive theatrical notices in the late 1930s.
