The Federal Music Project's theater of Music poster from 1936 advertised performances of opera and operetta in New York City, one of the program's most visible efforts during the Depression. The Federal Music Project was part of the Works Progress Administration, which employed musicians, singers and stage workers when private concert and theater work had dried up. Silkscreen posters like this one were cheap to produce in quantity and were pasted on walls and storefronts across the city to draw audiences to free or low-cost shows. The design's bold color blocks and simple lettering reflect the broader WPA poster style of the 1930s.
