A cello dominates this 1936 silkscreen poster, which advertised concerts by an American concert orchestra sponsored by the Federal Music Project. The project was one of the Works Progress Administration's arts programs, created in 1935 to put unemployed musicians back to work and bring live music to towns that rarely heard it. Posters like this one were produced cheaply in bold flat colors so they could be pasted up quickly in public places. The attribution to an artist named Carken is noted in the Library of Congress record, which also places the piece in the WPA Poster Collection.
