Few pictures on this board announce a specific Washington venue, and this 1936 silkscreen poster does so directly, promoting an exhibition at the Phillips Memorial Gallery. Duncan Phillips had opened the gallery in his family home in 1921 as one of the first modern art museums in the United States. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, hired artists during the Depression to make public art, and its poster unit adopted silkscreen because it was inexpensive and produced bold, flat areas of color. The poster shows how a relief program for working artists also reached audiences through public display.
