Announcing a 1936 exhibition of graphic arts, this silkscreen poster was issued under the sponsorship of the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration. Its subject headings place the show in Illinois, where the program's printmaking and exhibition activity was part of a broader effort to bring art to the public during the Depression. Silkscreen suited these posters because it was inexpensive, could be printed in short runs, and produced bold flat color that read well from a distance. The poster is documented in Christopher DeNoon's 1987 book *Posters of the WPA*, which is one reason it is often cited in studies of the program.
