This 1936 poster announces an exhibition of paintings in Illinois and was issued under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration. The Federal Art Project employed out-of-work artists on murals, easel paintings and public announcements, and its state units often produced posters like this one by silkscreen, a stencil process that allowed designers to print bold, flat areas of color in small runs. Today the piece survives mainly in the Library of Congress's Work Projects Administration Poster Collection, where it documents both the New Deal's support for artists and the graphic style of the 1930s.
