Advertising an exhibition of oils and watercolors at the Federal Art Gallery in New York City, this silkscreen poster was produced by the Federal Art Project, one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration. The project's poster unit used silkscreen to turn exhibition notices, public health messages and theater announcements into bold, flat-color designs that could be printed cheaply in large runs. A September 2, 1938, date stamp on the back suggests the sheet was in circulation or on file that year, and a 1987 study of WPA posters lists it as number 47.
