The Federal Music Project was one of the arts units of the Works Progress Administration, the New Deal agency that put unemployed musicians, painters and writers to work during the Depression. This silkscreen poster advertises free symphony concerts staged under its banner in New York City, a program that brought orchestral music to parks, schools and neighborhoods far from the concert halls of midtown. The Federal Art Project printed it between 1936 and 1941, and it stands as an example of the WPA's efforts to make posters both practical notices and works of graphic design. Silkscreen was a relatively new method then, and the bold flat color of its shapes is worth a close look.
