Eight free concerts on a rooftop garden at the Jamaica YMCA in Queens make this poster a small record of the Federal Music Project's reach beyond Manhattan. The Project, part of the Works Progress Administration's Federal One program, put unemployed musicians back to work during the Depression and brought live performances to parks, schools, and community centers at little or no cost to audiences. The poster was printed in silkscreen, a method the WPA poster division favored because it was inexpensive to produce in quantity and allowed flat, bold color that could be read from across a street.
