The WPA Federal Music Project poster advertising free band concerts at the Brooklyn Museum stands out for its focus on public music in a museum setting, a pairing that was not especially common. The Federal Music Project was one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration, created in 1935 to put unemployed musicians to work and bring live performance to ordinary neighborhoods. Its posters were often produced by the Federal Art Project's silkscreen workshops, which made bold, flat-color designs cheap enough to post on streets, storefronts and public buildings. Posters like this one were part of a broader effort to make culture visible and accessible to working-class New Yorkers during the Depression.
