Few dance posters from the period name their performers as plainly as this one, which puts Myra Kinch and her group at the center of a festival of modern dance, with music by Manuel Galea. Produced in 1938 under the Federal theater Project, a unit of the Works Progress Administration, it was one of many posters meant to draw audiences to live performances during the Depression. Modern dance in the 1930s broke from ballet's formal conventions, and California programs like this one were part of a wider movement in which dancers and composers developed new forms together. The silkscreen process gave the design flat, bold color suited to quick reading on city streets.
