A silkscreen poster from 1938 advertises a festival of modern dance built around Myra Kinch and her company, a bright reminder that the Federal theater Project promoted live performance during the Depression. Its designers worked for the Works Progress Administration's poster division, which used inexpensive screen printing to announce concerts, plays and exhibitions across the country. In the 1930s, modern dance was pushing away from classical ballet toward movement rooted in expression and the body, and California's dancers took part in that shift. Posters like this one show how public arts programs helped carry those new forms to ordinary audiences.
