Brahms's symphonies anchor this silkscreen announcement for a concert series by the Federal Symphony Orchestra, presented by the WPA's Federal Music Project in New York City. The wording, "distinguished conductors and assisting artists," reflects how the New York units paired employed musicians with guest talent to offer affordable concerts during the Depression. The WPA Federal Art Project's poster unit produced such announcements in flat, bold color by silkscreen, a method that made inexpensive runs practical for public events. A date stamp on the back, February 9, 1938, places its circulation in the winter of that year.
