Advertising a standing schedule of programs every Wednesday evening at 8, this 1942 silkscreen poster invites New Yorkers to a regular series of free concerts. The Federal Music Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, put unemployed musicians to work performing and teaching during the Depression, and its programs reached audiences who could rarely afford a ticket. The color silkscreen process was a favorite of WPA poster units, which used it to publicize cultural events cheaply and in bold, eye-catching designs. The Federal Music Project wound down in 1943 as federal relief programs gave way to wartime needs.
