Arthur Sullivan appears here as the subject of "English music," a Vanity Fair caricature by the artist known as Spy, Leslie Ward. The color lithograph was printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son and later reproduced in The Vanity Fair Album, the 1874 volume compiled under the name Jehu Junior. By the early 1870s Sullivan was an established English composer, and his comic operas with W. S. Gilbert would soon make him a household name. Vanity Fair's weekly portraits of prominent Victorians were widely read, so the print also shows how a composer was presented to London readers of the period.
