Here a boatman dances on the deck to the tune of a fiddle while his companions look on, a scene that captures the leisure and high spirits of river crews. George Caleb Bingham, a Missouri painter, drew many such scenes of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, where flatboats carried farm goods and timber downstream to markets like New Orleans. Thomas Doney's mezzotint translates Bingham's painting into soft, rich tones, and Powell & Co. printed it around 1847. The men's easy camaraderie reflects the rough, close-knit culture of the river trade in the 1840s.
