This sheet music cover is marked No. 1, the opening number in a series of drawing room polkas arranged for the piano forte. The polka, a lively couple dance that spread from Bohemia across Europe in the 1840s, quickly crossed the Atlantic, and publishers rushed out piano arrangements so families could dance at home. Boston publisher Oliver Ditson issued the music, and the Thayer & Co. firm handled the color lithography that shows a dancing couple. Its cheerful, modest design reflects how the polka became a fixture of middle-class parlors.
