The figure here is Mlle. Plunkett in the Mañola costume she wore for the ballet in Donizetti's *La favorite*, an opera that drew on Spanish settings and gave its dancers lively character roles. Alophe drew and lithographed the plate, and the Paris printer Auguste Bry published it around 1850 as part of a series of Opéra dancers in their costumes. Prints like this were popular with theatergoers and fashion-minded buyers, who used them to follow the stage styles of the day. Look closely at the hand coloring, which gives the costume's fabrics and trims their color and show how such images were finished by hand.
