Marie Taglioni is shown here in the costume of La Sylphide, the 1832 Romantic ballet that made her one of the most celebrated dancers of her era. The lithograph comes from a series of plates of Paris Opéra dancers and their stage costumes, drawn and lithographed by Alophe and printed by Auguste Bry, and it was issued in the 1850s as the first plate of that set. Hand coloring on prints like this was often done by hand after printing, which gave the white tulle skirt and gauzy wings a delicate finish. The plate is a useful record of how the sylph's airy, fitted bodice and layered skirt were understood in Paris a generation after the ballet's premiere.
