The figure is identified in the record as Mlle. Marquet, though the question mark in the title signals some uncertainty about the name, and she is shown in costume for *Marco Spada*, a work tied to the Paris stage of the period. The sheet was drawn and lithographed by Alophe and printed by Auguste Bry, and it was issued as the fifth number in a series of Paris dancers' costume plates. Hand coloring was common in these publications and shows the fabric, trim and tutu-like skirts that defined stage fashion in the 1840s and 1850s. Such plates offer a close record of how dancers were dressed and how Paris audiences saw them.
