This hand-colored lithograph shows a dancer identified in the record as Mlle. Lina Richard, though the surname is marked with a question mark, in a role from the ballet *Marco Spada*. Its designer and lithographer, Alophe, drew a series of costume plates of Paris Opéra dancers, and this sheet was issued by the printer Auguste Bry, probably around 1850. Such plates were part of a booming market for fashion and theater images in mid-century Paris, when the Opéra's ballet stars were celebrated in print and their costumes were closely followed by audiences. The hand coloring on this example adds to its value as a record of how stage dress looked to contemporary viewers.
