The dancer Mme. Ferraris appears in costume for the ballet des elfes, or elves' ballet, a fantasy role that suited the supernatural themes popular on the Paris stage at mid-century. Alophe drew and lithographed the plate, and Auguste Bry printed it. It belongs to a series of Opéra dancers and their costumes, and its hand coloring reflects the fashion-minded prints of the period. Published around 1850, it shows how stage costume reached popular print culture in Paris.
