The poster announces the Gay 90s Art Ball, staged by the Hyde Park Golden Jubilee Committee in Illinois as part of a neighborhood celebration. The 1890s theme looked back to the decade that gave the Gay Nineties their name, a period of bustling urban life and turn-of-the-century fashion that Depression-era audiences could still picture fondly. Printed in 1939 by the Work Projects Administration's poster program, it shows how federal arts projects produced silkscreen announcements for local civic and social events. The stamped date on the back, September 7, 1939, places it just days after Germany invaded Poland, a reminder that community gatherings continued even as the wider world darkened.
