Few posters from the WPA promote a book as directly as this one, which advertises a guide to the Golden State put out by the Federal Writers' Project of Northern California in 1936. The project was one of several white-collar programs run under the Works Progress Administration during the Depression, and its American Guide Series eventually covered every state. The California volume aimed to tell the state's past and present together, from early settlement to the growing tourism that was drawing visitors west. The poster was made by silkscreen, a method the WPA poster units used to produce inexpensive, bold images for public display.
