*Who's Who in the Zoo* was an illustrated natural history prepared by the Federal Writers' Project, and this silkscreen poster from 1936 puts its apes front and center. The Writers' Project was a branch of the Works Progress Administration that produced guidebooks and booklets during the Depression, and the agency's poster division used silkscreen to advertise them to the public. The poster is attributed to the artist Sidney Jacobson, and a June 1937 date stamp on the back records when it was processed. Pairing a book title with a zoo scene shows how the WPA tried to bring cultural programs to ordinary Americans.
