Few Depression-era posters announce admission as plainly as this 1936 silkscreen, which invites visitors to Brookfield Zoo on its free days: Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. The Works Progress Administration's poster program hired artists to make inexpensive color prints for public agencies and events, and this design is credited to Carken, with the Federal Writers Project listed as sponsor. Brookfield Zoo, on the western edge of Chicago, had opened only a couple of years earlier, and the polar bears named in its subject tags hint at the animals that drew crowds to its grounds.
