The hippopotamus is the animal this Brookfield Zoo poster puts at the center, a detail that sets it apart from other zoo images of the period. Brookfield, in suburban Chicago, opened in 1934 with moated, open-air enclosures meant to replace the barred cages of older zoos, and the Federal Art Project's poster unit produced works like this to promote such public attractions. The silkscreen print is dated 1936, and a date stamp of August 1938 on its reverse suggests it stayed in circulation for some time.
