A silkscreen poster from 1936, its title "Brookfield Zoo--By the L" points to the suburban zoo's easy access by Chicago's elevated train, the "L," which carried visitors out from the city. Brookfield Zoo had opened in 1934 with moated, barless enclosures that were then considered a modern approach to displaying animals. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, sponsored the poster, one of many that artists produced during the Depression to promote public institutions and recreation. Its subject tags also list pandas, a detail worth noting when considering what visitors of the period could see.
