Few posters from the period put free admission so plainly up front, promising visitors to Brookfield Zoo entry without charge on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The zoo opened in 1934 in Brookfield, a Chicago suburb, and the polar bear subject points to one of its best-known animals. The poster is a color silkscreen made under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which employed artists during the Depression to produce public notices and advertisements. A date written on the back, October 13, 1936, suggests when it was in circulation.
