This WPA silkscreen poster, produced in 1936, is a promotional piece for the American Guide Series, a Federal Writers' Project venture that tried to make the country's regions known to residents and travelers alike. Its title, "Skiing in the East," points to a winter sport that was growing in popularity during the Depression, when many Americans looked to affordable outdoor recreation. The poster's modest cost and bold flat color reflect the Work Projects Administration's practice of employing artists to produce public-facing graphics. A date stamp on the back, February 1939, shows the sheet was later filed and circulated within the collection.
