What sets this poster apart is that it promotes a book rather than a place: the Illinois volume of the American Guide Series, a state guidebook produced by the Federal Writers Project. Silkscreen posters like this one came out of the Work Projects Administration's art program in the 1930s, and this one carries the sponsorship of Governor Henry Horner and the Federal Writers Project of Illinois. A date stamp of February 16, 1940 on the back shows that the sheet was still being handled and filed several years after it was printed.
