A halftone reproduction of Aaron Douglas's painting *Jazz at Home* appeared as an illustration in Alain Locke's anthology *The New Negro*, published in 1925. Locke's book gathered poetry, fiction, essays, and visual art by Black writers and artists, and it is often cited as a defining document of the Harlem Renaissance. Douglas, then a young artist working in New York, favored flattened forms and stylized silhouettes that set his work apart from academic realism. Printing the painting in halftone let its musical subject reach a readership far beyond the galleries where original works were shown.
