A jazz performance staged for the bears at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., gives this picture an unusual twist on the music scene of its era. It belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, a body of commercial photographs of the capital taken by a firm that recorded street life, public events and institutions in the early twentieth century. The record dates the image only to between 1920 and 1932, the years when jazz was spreading quickly through American dance halls, records and radio. Pictures like this one show how a public zoo could become a stage for popular entertainment and a place where city crowds gathered.
