A violin, a bow, folded sheet music and a letter with its envelope are pinned or propped against a flat board in a way that seems to invite a reach across the picture plane. That illusion, known as trompe l'oeil, or "fool the eye," was a prized skill in American still life painting from the late 1800s, when artists such as William Harnett and John Haberle built careful, realistic arrangements of everyday objects. Such works were often meant to be looked at closely, with viewers testing whether the textures of wood, paper and string were real. The arrangement also nods to the leisure of the period, when home music making was a common pastime.
