This 1936 silkscreen poster advertises free or low-cost music lessons in piano, voice, violin, cello, and theory, offered in New York under the Federal Music Project. That project was one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration, created in 1935 to put unemployed musicians to work and to bring music instruction and concerts to communities that rarely had access to them. The poster belongs to the WPA's large body of publicity work, and its silkscreen method was a practical choice: it allowed the New York poster unit to produce bright, inexpensive multicolor notices in quantity for public buildings, schools, and community centers.
