The record for this 1936 silkscreen poster names the Federal Music Project, one of the arts units of the Works Progress Administration, as its sponsor and carries a New York City music education subject heading. Its purpose was practical: it told the public where Federal Music Project classes and schools could be found. The WPA ran these arts programs during the Great Depression to keep musicians and other artists employed while bringing free or low-cost instruction and performances to ordinary communities. Posters like this one were produced by the WPA's own silkscreen workshops, which made their graphic style a lasting feature of the period.
