This 1936 silkscreen poster advertises adult music courses in piano, voice and other instruments offered under the Federal Music Project in New York. The project was one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration, created in 1935 to put unemployed musicians back to work while bringing music instruction and performances to the public. Silkscreen was the method of the WPA poster workshops, which used bold color and simple lettering to make inexpensive notices that could be printed in quantity and posted quickly. The poster shows how New York's Depression-era arts programs reached ordinary adults who might not otherwise have afforded lessons.
