This 1938 silkscreen poster advertises free music lessons offered by the Federal Music Project of New York City, a unit of the Works Progress Administration (later renamed the Work Projects Administration in 1939). Its border lists the course offerings, which run from piano, voice, and violin to theory, ear training, music history, ensemble, and opera coaching, reflecting how broad the program was. The Federal Music Project employed musicians who had lost work during the Depression and offered instruction and performances to the public at little or no cost. Posters like this one, made by the federal arts projects, were a major means of reaching ordinary New Yorkers with news of these classes.
