A tall transmission tower stands at the center of this picture, its crossarms built to carry electric wires over long distances. The print dates from about 1938 to 1945, when federal programs such as the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Rural Electrification Administration were pushing power lines into rural areas that had little or no electricity. Steel towers of this kind were a common sight on new routes, and photographs of them helped record how quickly the national grid was growing.
