The East 35th Street station of the New York Edison Company was one of the central power plants that supplied electric light to the city, and this stereograph records it at a moment when electricity was still new enough to draw public attention. The card was published around 1909, the year of the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, which marked the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage and the 100th anniversary of Robert Fulton's steamboat. Stereo cards like this were viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the flat image a sense of depth. Its catalog record places it in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division.
