Few utility buildings in 1930s Brooklyn carried as direct a link to Thomas Edison as the Brooklyn Edison Company's building at Pearl and Willoughby Streets, shown here around 1932. The company supplied the borough's electricity and traced its roots to the Edison electric lighting enterprises of the 1880s, so the building stood as a visible sign of the power network that had changed city life. The photograph is credited to Irving Underhill, a New York photographer known for street and architectural views, and it preserves a record of the downtown streetscape as well as the company's architecture.
