Thomas Alva Edison appears here alongside a man named J. Daniels, a pairing the record gives only as a title drawn from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion and the identity of Daniels remain unconfirmed. The picture is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, assembled from the work of the Bain News Service, a Manhattan agency that supplied press photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Edison was then among the most publicized inventors in the country, and the Bain files preserve many of the portraits and events that shaped his public image. Glass plates of this kind carry fine detail, and their small format reflects the working practice of the period.
