The record places this view at the Thomas A. Edison, Inc. works in New Jersey during the night fire of Wednesday, December 16, 1914, which was taken from a vantage point that shows the blaze at its height. The fire swept through several buildings at the company's sprawling complex, destroying a large part of its storage and manufacturing space. Edison, then 67 and already famous for his inventions, faced heavy losses but moved quickly to rebuild. The photograph is a useful record of a disaster that tested one of America's best-known industrial laboratories.
