A sneeze, caught in a sequence of photographs, is the subject here: Frederic P. Ott, named in the record, is shown mid-sneeze in front of the camera. The motion study was made in Thomas Edison's Black Maria studio in New Jersey in early January 1894, and the series of still images was produced as publicity to accompany an article in *Harper's Weekly* about the kinetoscope. W.K.-L. Dickson, who took the pictures, registered them for copyright that same month. The sequence is an early example of breaking a brief, ordinary movement into separate frames so that viewers could study it closely.
