Frederic P. Ott is the subject caught mid-sneeze, in a short film shot in Thomas Edison's Black Maria studio in early January 1894. W.K.L. Dickson, who led much of Edison's motion picture work, made the film for publicity, and its still frames were used to illustrate an article in *Harper's Weekly*. The clip runs about five seconds, and the print was copyrighted under Dickson's name from Orange, New Jersey. It shows how early experimenters turned a brief, involuntary bodily movement into a subject for scientific study and popular display.
