Edison appears here with W.K.L. Dickson and other members of his staff, gathered around the phonograph that had been refined to record on wax cylinders rather than the earlier tinfoil. The photograph was taken around 1892 at Edison's laboratory in West Orange, New Jersey, where his team worked on sound recording, motion pictures, and many other inventions. Dickson, who held the copyright, was a key figure in the lab's early motion-picture experiments, which helps explain why he would have recorded the scene. A version of the image was later reproduced in Matthew Josephson's 1959 biography, *Edison*.
