Few lighthouses announce themselves quite like this one, with its bold black and white bands rising above a scatter of low dunes and modest houses. The stripes were a daymark, a pattern painted so that mariners could tell one tower from another in daylight and fix their position along a featureless coast. Striped towers like this were common on sandy shores where the land itself offered few landmarks, and the houses clustered nearby would have housed the keeper and his family. Look closely at the contrast between the sharp painted bands and the soft, wind-shaped dunes, which shows how the tower served as both a navigational aid and a civic marker on the landscape.
