Liverpool Bay, where the Dee, Mersey and Ribble meet the Irish Sea, was a hazard to shipping for centuries, with shifting sandbanks and fast tides that caught out unwary captains. This engraved plate gathers the sea and land marks a mariner would need to find the way in, showing the coastline and the navigational points set along it. Charts and plates like this one were the working tools of the period, and they reflect how much pilots depended on fixed landmarks and the lights that marked them after dark. Look closely at how the engraver distinguishes headlands from low sandy shore, a detail that mattered to anyone trying to avoid running aground.
